This photo shows the top left corner of the fire surround; the mantle piece itself is not present.

A peacock's feather is a wispy, thin thing when looked at on its own coming into its own as part of a cascade.
My attempt at getting an overall impression of feathers and 'eyes' saw most of the carving done with a V tool.
