This sculpture is carved from a solid block of Iroko (approximately a 2ft cube), some 50 years old.
The lettering is loose Roman, painted blue. The text "And I shall have some peace now" was given me by the client.
There was a huge crack in the block which I expanded into a sort of cave, charred black, and filled with bright blue marbles. It's a very 'feely' work, not unlike an egg.
I tried to express the idea in the sculpture, and not just as a panel of pretty writing.
The idea is that the reader works their way around, 'discovers' the nest of marbles and reaches in to hold one up to the light.
Peace, if it is to be found anywhere, exists here and now. An experience, in ourselves; in this moment.
