Chris Pye: Woodcarving

Green Man in the Round
by Robert Parkin
Yew, 2005
Height 12in. Width 5 1/2in.

Author's Notes about the Carving.

I have been fascinated by the Greenman for many years and have made several attempts at carving them, some relief and others like this one in the round.
I didn't have a particular design for this greenman; I just started chipping away, drawing leaves and features straight onto the wood and, three months later, this is the result.

I quite like the different colour of the heartwood which shows through in several places.
The face was sanded down and the leaves were left with a tooled surface, the carving was finished off with Danish oil and wax.

Would you like to contribute an interesting, contemporary, Green Man (gargoyles, grotesque etc) woodcarving?
Or have you a friend you could encourage to have their work shown?
Yes? Then I'd love to here from you!

Write to me, telling me a little about it first.
Thanks!
