List of Slipstones Woodcarving Manuals Teaching __________________________________________ 1. NEW SPONSORED EBOOK __________________________________________ 1) NEW FREE EBOOK Here is the last in the series: "Quick Carving Questions - 4", the fourth compilation of those Quick Carving Questions that appear most months in this newsletter. Another great read and full of useful carving tips and advice, and available for free because of sponsoring by Fred Damsen and The Japan Woodworker: http://www.japanwoodworker.com/) and Preferred Edge Carving Knives & Supplies. Here's what Fred says: "Japan Woodworker offers a variety of woodcarving tools, including a wide selection of professional grade wood carving tools manufactured exclusively for The Japan Woodworker by Japanese master blacksmiths. "These tools are a hand forged layering of hard high carbon steel and soft low carbon steel. They are heat treated and tempered to Rc 63-65 for razor sharp edges that will outlast the competition. "When you use our tools, you will immediately notice a difference in your work." I hope to bring you a review of Japanese carving tools next month. Enjoy, learn, benefit, pass it on - and please take a moment to thank Fred by reading about The Japan Woodworker in the ebook and visiting the website: http://www.japanwoodworker.com You'll see links to Quick Carving Questions - 4 on the website home page: http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/ or you can go directly to the download page here: http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/slipstones/qcq4.html There's a full list of ebooks and information about 'ebooks' here: http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/slipstones/index.html __________________________________________ 2. NEW GALLERY CARVINGS __________________________________________ Here is a gallery of pictures of a recently completed lettered sculpture, carved from a solid block of Iroko (approximately a 2ft cube), some 50 years old. If you look at the other galleries you'll see my style of work is very broad, but I still have to say that this piece is more the sort of thing I get up to when I'm given a free rein - as I was! It hasn't a title as such but is based on the client's text: "And I shall have some peace now" I'm tempted to describe it but pictures are worth a thousand words eh? and you'd be here forever. Go and have a look: http://www.chrispye-woodcarving.com/gallery/gallery15.html __________________________________________ 3. FESTIVAL OF WOOD __________________________________________ I will be demonstrating woodcarving (sharpening, gouges and rasps etc) and available for praise, abuse or discussions for 3 days: 27 August to Monday 29th August, 2005 at: The Festival of Wood, Westonbirt Arboretum, Gloucestershire UK. More details nearer the time. For the moment, put it in your diary! __________________________________________ 4. TEACHING USA & CANADA 2005 __________________________________________ I'd like to draw your attention to the 2005 USA and Canada teaching dates that appear quietly at the bottom of the newsletter: * USA (CENTER FOR FURNITURE CRAFTSMANSHIP, MAINE) http://www.woodschool.org/ June 20 - 24 Ornamental Carving (Mouldings) June 27 - July 1 Relief Carving July 4 - July 8 Carving Tutorial * CANADA (ROSEWOOD STUDIO, ALMONTE, ONTARIO) http://www.rosewoodstudio.com Sep 12 - Sep 16 Relief Carving I (Beginners) Sep 19 - Sep 23 Relief Carving II (Advanced) Both these establishments are first rate and I feel privileged to be invited there again to teach. The courses are focussed and students learn a lot of really good skills and approached to carving. It's a chance to share in real life the woodcarving I teach in my books in a friendly atmosphere. And we get to hang out at lunch and chat about... woodcarving! (Yeah, right. Everything and anything!) So, have a look at the websites, see more of what's on offer and come along. See you there! __________________________________________ 5. CARVING SMALL __________________________________________ Anyone for Netsuke? Do you like working small scale?
