LEARNING TO CARVE

7: Right Conditions

You need 6 elements to actually carve:
  • a place to work
  • a piece of wood
  • ways of holding the carving
  • a selection of carving tools
  • a means of sharpening them
  • a suitable idea
Book cover

I can't discuss them in detail here. However, I have written about them in my book:
Relief Carving in Wood.

But just think through this list of 6 things for a moment...

In essence these conditions give you the opportunity to carve.
In one way or another you will need to get these together early on.
Put them together and off you go!

But in themselves they are not enough, you need some knowledge, some understanding of what to do.
You must know about the tools you use, how to sharpen them correctly, how to handle grain and so on.

As it's impossible to give specific advice here - circumstances differ - my best advice is for you to adopt a particular stance to learning.
