'Do you ever make mistakes when you are carving?'

I often get asked this - most frequently by students or visitors at a woodcarving demonstration.

And somehow, and very mysteriously, a small, awed voice always asks it from a dark corner of the room in which I'm giving a slide show...

The questioners are non-carvers, of course.
Carvers know that when you carve wood, you skate continually near the brink of disaster.

The answer is 'Yes', and here's my approach...
