This is the synopsis given by Amazon:
"A collection of about 50 contributions on sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider, including representative work from all periods of his career. They explore the sources and reception of his art, his social milieu and the organization of his workshop, and his polychrome and monochrome sculpture."
This book was a catalogue for an exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, Washington at the end of 1999, but you wouldn't know that to look at it: Sumptious, beautifully made, and with excellent photographs and documentation of about 50 works by this great master carver.
What makes this book especially fascinating is the technical notes and details of the carvings: the hollowing of the backs, repairs and painting. I love this stuff - you get a real sense of the pieces.
This volume, along with Baxandall's other book is a must for anyone interested in Riemenschneider - of just great carvings.
